POLICE today warned motorists parking at beauty spots around Warminster to be on their guard against thieves breaking into cars.
During the spring and summer there is a big rise in this type of crime when dog walkers and ramblers park in secluded areas and return to find valuables missing from their vehicles.
However this year the thieves are starting early.
Acting Inspector Ray Lewis for Warminster and Westbury Police said: "We have already had some (offences) at Heavens Gate, Chittern, Ash Lane and Crockerton.
"These offences historically increase as the year moves on so people really need to be aware of suitable prevention advice."
Police are advising people to take bags with them rather than putting them in the glove box or boot, never leave valuables visible, and make sure the car is locked.
They are also warning motorists to remove the sucker marks that satellite navigation devices leave on the windscreen, and report any suspicious looking individuals.

She returned to find her car window had been smashed, and her valuables taken. Not only that, but they had busted the key lock to her driver door, and it was unusable.
What was most horrific about this for her was losing a photograph of her late parents that was irreplaceable. She also found it difficult to gather the courage to go on the hills for a long time.
You just don't expect it in that area, and of course you think that this kind of thing will 'never happen to me'.
It is a shame that the police never catch anyone related to these crimes: I don't want a situation where CCTV is installed in and around our beauty spots, but something has to give.
I don't expect these thieves to be reading this (I doubt that they even can read), but it's up to all of us to be vigilant and brave, and challenge people when they behave badly. If you see something suspicious, don't just ignore it!
