Wasted chance to get fire clear-up moving

This Is Wiltshire: The fire at Averies had been burning for four weeks The fire at Averies had been burning for four weeks

AVERIES Recycling missed a weekend deadline to start removing waste which is hampering the clean up of the fire at their Marshgate site.

The Environment Agency gave the company until noon on Saturday for begin action but nothing happened.

The blaze has been burning for four weeks and firefighters believe that the removal of some of the waste will provide a huge boost in putting out the fire.

The agency has been working with firefighters, Averies, Swindon Council, NHS England and Wiltshire Police to deal with the incident.

Ash Dobson, from the Environment Agency, said: “On Saturday afternoon we advised the operator of our intent to use our powers to remove waste from the site to allow Wiltshire Fire and Rescue services the space to extinguish the fire.

“Environment Agen-cy contractors will start work as soon as possible. We are using our powers because the operator has failed to respond to previous enforcement notices. The multi-agency response group have done significant preparatory work to allow all parties to safely remove the waste, address risks of pollution and extinguish the fire as quickly as possible. We’re grateful for the ongoing cooperation of residents and businesses as the plan progresses.”

The Environment Agency will look to recover costs of hiring the contractor from Averies.

Since the fire started residents and business have been affected by smoke from the scene, and a petition calling for a public inquiry into how the authorities have handled the incident has been launched.

Sally Coble, from the Environment Agency, said: “I’m sure it must be very frustrating for everyone living there. We have been working since the fire broke out to get a resolution, and sometimes these things don’t happen as quickly as we would like.

“I’m sorry that things have taken as long as they have but this is not just down to the Environment Agency. It is down to the operator not wanting to come to a resolution quickly.”

The removal of the waste is expected to start this week. Previously, the council-owned former Groundwell park and rides site had been earmarked as a potential location for the transferred rubbish but that lead to a protests from residents.

The Adver understands the waste will be taken to Hills Waste Solutions, in Blunsdon.

😁 if Averies are still refusing to cooperate they should find themselves in court.😁
My relatives have taken a holiday, with relatives up north, just to get a reprieve from the constant smoke pollution.
Maplins, PC World, Staples, etc must be absolutely sick and tired of this by now

Just can't believe what Averies are getting away with . Why are people still renting skips from them, people should boycott them , the council should close them down permanently and seize all their assets and sell to pay off the cost that's been incurred . If this was a normal person who hasn't paid their Council tax for a couple of months , they'd be in court now with high cost against them.

Do we know what legal powers can be used and how long they would take to implement? We all know what we would like to happen, but are there actual usable powers to do that?

Yes--they can suspend or remove their waste carriers licences. For gross negligence.

What a tw@tish comment from a small minded individual!! Do you think for one minute that Averies give a sh1t about their employees??
Blatant disregard for the law, their neighbours and their customers!
I hope the authorities come down hard on them, and i for one as a local resident intend pursuing them through the courts.

But surely you wouldnt be happy about making money through making people unhealthy?
If you are an employee you would be taken care of as part of any compensation package. If you are management you are part of the problem and must of been aware of poor working process.

I do feel sorry for the guys doing the collecting, working in the yard etc. I doubt they are on big money or have union backing to help them. I reckon they just have to get on with their work or they won't get paid. As I said above I'd seek legal advice(citizens advice bureau is a good place to start)and see what their rights are.
The stink from this fire reaches coate so this effects thousands of people. Those nearby have my sympathy as this is a farce of a situation.

Are you just attempting to increase the anti-averies sentiment?
Almost protesting too much it seems

It is still not clear who the guilty parties are. Clearly the blame sits with more than just averies, who allowed them to operate in a way that was clearly unsafe? When was the last audit? Why were the findings of the audit not acted on?
No one should have to work in unhealthy conditions and people who live in the area have a right to clean air.
Either way a public investigation must be held....Although I do not think it will as some of those involved will not allow the information to become public.
County council meetings are now open to all so attending the meetings should be no problem for anyone that wishes to.
When has the local council scheduled a meeting to discuss this issue?

People and other business use Averies because they’re CHEAP, and at the end of the day most people don’t care how they handle the waste once they’ve taken it away, after all it not their problem, Averies is a licensed.

Some people seem to have short memories on how drawn out these affairs can take and just what powers statutory authorities have to use their range of powers. They have, because people have dictated that they wanted it, a long process to follow which allows any person or business reasonable time to act before they can just step in and do what needs doing.

At each stage, if the tax paid for agency is to avoid expensive litigation and compensation claims, they must be seen to be acting in a reasonable manner. Believe me, what might seem reasonable to those effected by the bilging smoke and noxious fumes at this moment in time, will have a very different interpretation put on it by the courts if litigation against the agency were to go ahead.

For those with short memories I’d suggest you take a quick browse of the internet looking up the saga of Mathew Singh and the Swindon Mechanics Institute. A good example of how business owners can stonewall time and again but, if properly followed, statutory authorities and agencies CAN get a result in the end.

As for Averies employees, yes I feel sorry for them but as Averies are IMHO a bunch of cowboys, they have themselves partly to blame for the predicament that they’re about to find themselves in. NO company management can get away with what I feel Averies will eventually be proved to have been doing with the complicity of their employees, who untimely could and should have blown the whistle long before the resulting fire.

I may have missed something and if I have, I apologise.

What are the long term effects on health of the fumes and smoke that people have been subjected to over the last month.

The health issue is far more important than talking about Averies closure. Children, OAPs and people with health problems should be told what the effect of long term exposure may be.

Has air sampling been done to determine what pollutants are involved.

These are the issues that local people need the facts on.

as a hard working resident who lives quite close to the fire i find your comments rather out of touch. its not up to EA to sort it out its up to Averies to sort this mess out. the use of capital letters is like shouting nobody listens to people who shout. There are a lot of unanswered questions that need answers from all sides (averies, sbc,ea ). unless we have a full public enquiry any investigation done by the authorities will be behind closed doors and swept under the carpet.so the only way forward is to support the e petition more people sign it the more SBC has to do something. oh by the way i am a disabled person who suffers with breathing difficulties so the last month has been no joke
