Three taken to hospital after carriage of Longleat train overturns

A fire crew from Westbury and a crew from Warminster went to Longleat Safari Park today, after the rear carriage of the park’s railway train overturned this afternoon while there were 155 people on board.

According to a tweet from @WiltshireFRS, six people were injured and were being attended to at the scene.

Firefighters, who were called at 3.45pm, made the train safe before helping out with first aid.

One woman is thought to have been trapped by the leg at one point but was free by the time fire crews arrived.

A later tweet said: "Crews from Warminster & Westbury been to #Longleat this pm where rear carriage of on-site train had overturned. Happily no-one trapped." 

Wiltshire Air Ambulance was at the scene and flew a woman to the Royal United Hospital, Bath, for treatment.

South West Ambulance Service paramedic Chris Roxburgh tweeted: "Good team work at #Longleat with the @WiltsAirAmbu Sending the family and patient best wishes."

In a statement, Steve Mytton, Longleat public relations manager, said: "At approximately 15.40hrs today (Wednesday) there was an incident involving the miniature train at Longleat where two carriages came off the track as the train was coasting into the station.

"One carriage went on to its side and the other remained upright, the other carriages stayed on the track.

"Staff immediately instigated the emergency procedure to safely evacuate all passengers from the train and the emergency services were notified.

"There were 155 people on the train at the time.

"At this time there are three people confirmed to have sustained injuries and have been taken to hospital.

"Staff are currently undertaking a thorough investigation into what caused the incident and the railway will remain closed during this time."
