A GROUP of past and present women of the Royal Air Force have joined together to take part in a relay across Britain to raise money for two charities.
WRAFS on Tour, a group of around 600 former and serving WRAFS, started the challenge on June 28 in Stranraer in Scotland and will finish on October 25 at the National Arboretum in Lichfield.
The challenge will raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and the Royal Air Force Association and each woman will cover as far as she is able by walking, cycling or running.
The Wiltshire leg of the relay will be from RAF Brize Norton to the former RAF hospital site at Alexandra Park, near Wroughton, on September 4 and from Wroughton to former RAF Upavon on September 5. On September 27 they will head from Rudloe Manor to Lyneham, and on September 28 from Lyneham to Fairford in Gloucestershire.
2014 is an important year, in terms of anniversaries, for women in the Royal Air Force. It will be 75 years since WAAF was formed; 65 years since the name changed to WRAF and 20 years since the ‘W’ officially disappeared under the complete merge with RAF.
