This Is Wiltshire: Good fun and a good cause Good fun and a good cause

ORGANISERS of the annual Southbrook Inn Fete aim to raise thousands of pounds for charity this weekend.

The event, now in its seventh year, features a full programme of activities between noon and 4pm on Sunday.

Funds from the festivities, which are being organised by Bob and Gina Downing, will be split between community groups and charities.

Bob, landlord of The South-brook Inn, said: “My wife and I started this event as a mini fete a few years back, and from a small acorn it has grown into something rather big.

“Last year, we attracted around 4,000 people and raised around £3,200 for good causes, which shows just how popular the event has become.

“The fete is good old-fashioned fun for all the family and there is something on offer for everyone to enjoy.

“We are very proud that it is so popular.”

During the day there will be a carousel, stalls and, for children, face painting.

One of the major highlights will be three slideshows portraying Swindon of yesteryear. They have been put together by the Swindon Society.

One will show how the town has changed over the decades, another will focus on the history of the town’s scout groups There will also be a show telling the story of one of the town’s well-known photographers, Albert Beany.

Diane Everett, from the Swindon Society, said: “Preparations for the slideshows are going fine. We have been part of this event for the last four years and it is something we enjoy supporting.

“The slideshows have always seemed to go down well.

“I think people of all ages, in particular the older generation, love to see how things were and compare them with how they are now.

“I do love to hear people chatting about what they are viewing and exchanging their fond memories.”

During the Southbrook Inn fete there will be a selection of refreshments available.
