WORK on a multi-million pound project to ease traffic movement in Swindon started yesterday and drivers are being warned of possible hold-ups.

The Bruce Street Bridges are set to be converted into a single roundabout while work further along the Great Western Way is also set to take place.

It is expected the first stage will be completed by October next year before work then begins on the transfer bridges.

The junction is a regular source of disruption during busy periods and the problem is exasperated during storms when rain water pools at the roundabout, bringing traffic almost to a standstill.

Although the work is likely to bring a lot of disruption to the town in the coming months, there will be many benefits.

Coun Dale Heenan (Con, Covingham and Dorcan), the cabinet member for highways, said: “This work is being carried out for two reasons.

“The first is that during times of heavy rainfall the Bruce Street Bridges have often flooded and there is standing water which has held up traffic. This will solve that problem.

“Secondly, as Swindon has expanded, many of the roads have not kept pace. When completed it will ease.

“Unfortunately there will be some disruption and the council have been quite open about that. We would tell drivers to add an extra 15 to 20 minutes to their journey or find an alternative route while the works are taking place.”

As well as the roundabout, a traffic light controlled junction will be put along Newcombe Drive so access to the Hawksworth Industrial Estate is improved.

Starting in November, pipes will also be installed in nine roads around the Cheney Manor area as part of the scheme to reduce the amount of flooding.

Thousands of leaflets have been posted to residents and businesses to inform them of the works, which have been designed to keep any disruption to a minimum.

The scheme will cost about £8m and has been funded by the Government and contributions from developers.

Coun Heenan said: “As well as receiving government money for the scheme, Section 106 money from housing developments will be used.

“This work is essential to deliver a transport system that keeps pace with Swindon’s current road needs and future growth.”
