A CELEBRATION breakfast awaited those who put their best feet forward and walked to school.

Goddard Park Community Primary School, in Welcombe Avenue, Swindon, launched a five-minute walk zone with a special day on Friday to encourage children and their families to ditch the car.

As well as offering a special breakfast to walkers, pupils were encouraged to wear their best snazzy and silly socks for the day.

The event was hailed a success after 130 parents and children came along for the launch.

Coun Steve Allsop and Jane Deeley, schools travel adviser, attended and were delighted with the support from children and parents.

“The Five Minute Walk Zone has been introduced at school to encourage as many families as possible to walk either all or part of the way to school,” said headteacher Mike Welsh. “This will help our children and families to have some great exercise, be safer and it’s better for the environment.”

He thanked Tesco and Swindon Council’s Safer and Smarter Journeys Team for funding the event.
