Pewsey Vale School will be undergoing a Shard-like facelift after receiving a £430,500 grant from the Education Funding Agency.

The new glass will cover the front of the 1950s school building to give it a more modern look.

Deputy headteacher Tony Forsythe said: “It’s going to be like Pewsey’s version of The Shard. Everything from top to bottom is going to be glass – the old building is going to be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

“We’ve gone for the eco-friendly approach as well as the look, but then we’ve made sure we’ve done the best for environment as well.”

The school, which has 300 pupils, has also benefited from a new £132,000 kitchen, also funded by the EFA, which was completed during the summer holidays.

Mr Forsythe said: “It’s been extended because we are a growing school and all the machinery is state of the art. It’s something that we will look to giving access to the community.”

Work is almost complete on the school’s multi use games area, which is one of the first phases of Wiltshire Council’s Pewsey Campus.

The all-weather surface can be used for an array of sports including tennis, netball and basketball, and the school is just waiting for the markings to be painted on.

Mr Forsythe said: “It’s something we’ve needed for a long time. The school has got bigger because we’ve been increasing our academic results and we’ve got a larger cohort, about 12 per cent larger.

“It will have a huge impact on the community. It’s going to be ours but we’ve said we can open it for anybody after the school day.”

The school will be holding an open evening on Wednesday.

Governor Caroline Dalrymple said: “This is such a cosy, happy, intimate school with small classes.

“All of the teachers know their students and if you want a home environment school, here it is.

“It’s a really good school and it’s improving all the time.”
