Attack victim Jason Edwards is still in a critical but stable condition in a Bristol hospital and unable as yet to speak to police about a town centre assault that left him fighting for his life.

Mr Edwards, 42, of Devizes, was left with serious head injuries after he was beaten up as he walked down The Brittox during the early hours of Saturday morning.

He was found just seconds after he was left slumped in the doorway of Boots the chemist just before 3am.

Police have arrested a young man and two women all from Devizes on suspicion of causing grievious bodily harm but they were released on police bail.

The man, aged 20, and women of 22 and 26 are said by police to all know each other.

It is understood Mr Edwards and three other people walked together down The Brittox from the Brittox News end of the shopping parade towards Costa Coffee.

The attack started part way down the pedestrian-only road before continuing under the awning of Boots.

A young man who followed down the road a minute later found Mr Edwards, a former pupil of Devizes School, and rang for an ambulance. A crew arrived within about five minutes.

Mr Edwards was first taken to Great Western Hospital, Swindon, but was later transferred to Southmead Hospital where he remains.

It is understood he is an induced coma and police say his condition is not expected to change for several days.

Detectives want to hear from anyone who was near The Brittox in the early hours of Saturday morning and are also asking for businesses to contact them if they have CCTV footage of the surrounding area.

Town centre CCTV footage provided by cameras run by Devizes Development Partnership have been given to police and have been scrutinised by officers and police say they have been pivotal in their inquiries.

Inspector Matthew Armstrong said: “Our investigation is being led by Detective Inspector Mark Power who is continuing to look into a number of lines of inquiry.

"We are currently attempting to determine whether the victim and those suspected of the assault were previously known to each other.”

Detective Constable Tom Allen added: “Many people would have been in the area of The Brittox when the assault occurred.

"I would appeal to the public to come forward with any information about this incident.

"It is often the case that the smallest piece of information can lead to a prosecution.”

Anyone with information can contact DC Allen via 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
