Most pianists, and particularly those enlightened souls with a love of Bach, will have their favourite recording of the heavenly Bach Goldberg Variations. Mostly, I fancy, on now scratchy vinyl.

But, to hear and see them in the flesh, performed by one of the world’s most seductive and creative pianists, is another world.

it is said that Gottlieb Goldberg, a pupil of Bach, was a gifted player and would frequently play them during the night to make more bearable Bach’s bouts of insomnia.

I wonder how anyone could contemplate sleep while they were being played.

The textures, harmonies and utter beauty of this monumental work create emotions that can be overwhelming. Miss MacGregor did just that.

Her non-showoff style emphasised the beauty and made the score speak; her musicality was not so much breath taking as life-giving; and the nuances and colour which she injected were draining in their intensity.

The clarity of her playing has a feline, cut-glass substance - not a veneer - and the space and air she allows in the under melodies, no doubt through a complete and deep understanding of Bach’s intentions, is as if you are hearing it for the first time: Revealing and special.

Her modulation into that haunting, soporific G Minor variation was nothing short of magical.
