There was a minute’s silence as a mark of respect at St John’s School in Marlborough on Monday in memory of former pupil Max Pearson who died on Sunday morning.

Max, 21, is believed to have lost control of the car he was driving which collided with a tree in Savernake Forest at 5.40am. He sustained major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Grand Avenue, a private road in Savernake Forest, was closed for most of Sunday morning while emergency services were at the scene.

Police do not believe another vehicle was involved but are appealing for information from anyone who may have seen the collision or the silver Renault Clio, which Max was driving, prior to the incident.

Friends let off fireworks in his memory on Sunday night and plan to release Chinese lanterns in Savernake Forest tomorrow night.

Max lived with his mum and stepdad, Stella and Guy Clarkson in Maurice Way, Marlborough.

Miles Whittaker, senior vice principal, said of Max, who left St John’s before the sixth form: “We were very shocked to hear of the terrible incident last weekend.

“Our thoughts are with the young people involved and their families.”

Hywel Price-Richards, chairman of Newbury RFC, who Max played for, said: “Our condolences to the family. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”
