AN inquest has heard how a Bradford on Avon woman who battled mental health problems killed herself after it was revealed that her children would be taken away from her permanently.

Sharon Gee, 31, of Budbury Tyning, was found dead in her home from carbon monoxide poisoning on July 24, after being reported missing earlier in the day.

Ms Gee moved to Bradford on Avon in 2008. She had problems with drug abuse and had made previous attempts to take her life, the inquest in Salisbury was told on Wednesday.

Ms Gee had been admitted to Green Lane Hospital in Devizes several times. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2012 but a year later, after a psychiatric review, she was diagnosed with an autistic spectrum disorder.

Witnesses who gave evidence at the inquest said that Green Lane discharged Ms Gee on July 18 – a week after she was told about her children.

Ms Gee was described as an “obsessive compulsive cleaner”. On returning to her home, which had not been lived in for some time, she had a further breakdown and was taken to Fountain Way in Salisbury. She was discharged again on July 21.

Judge Ian Singleton said that Ms Gee faced a “catch 22 situation” in getting her children back. She had previously expressed her discomfort at staying at the property without them, but social services told her if she moved to a smaller property, it could put future visits at risk.

Mick Campbell, Ms Gee’s father, said he was disappointed with his daughter’s care at Green Lane.

He said: “I think it is a multi-agency failure and they are batting around the responsibility.

“Sharon was a very intelligent girl but she was also very plausible. You would think that mental health care professionals would be able to spot these things.

“She was sent home in a taxi, alone, without any support or services waiting for her. She just wanted to prove to social services that she could get her children back.”

Mr Singleton said that based on Ms Gee’s previous attempts to end her life, a verdict of suicide must be recorded.

Green Lane Hospital confirmed that it was reviewing its risk assessment process.
