POLICE are investigating a serious assault after a 31-year-old man was taken to hospital with head injuries in the early hours of this morning.

At around 5.18am officers were called to the steps of Swindon MECA in Regent Circus to reports the man, who is from Brecon, Wales, has suffered severe head injuries.

It is believed that around 5am, the man had been standing outside the MECA when he became involved in an altercation with a group of men and women.

The ambulance service attended the scene and transported the man to Great Western Hospital, where he is now in a stable condition.

No arrests have yet been made in relation to the incident and investigations are ongoing. Anyone with any information about the incident or any information relating to the group involved is asked to contact Swindon CID on 101.

Justin Britchford, senior partner at Swindon Meca, said: "This incident was nothing to do with our club and it is unfortunate that it has happened on our steps.

"We were not open at the time that this happened so it was not connected with Swindon Meca in any way, and did not involve any of our customers."
