A specialised load transporter, carrying a massive transformer, was escorted by Wiltshire Police from M4 Membury Services (Westbound) to Melksham yesterday.

The transporter and its load, with a gross weight of 180 tonnes, were described as slow moving and with the potential to create traffic congestion.

After leaving the M4 Membury Services, the load was transported in convoy westbound, on the A46, before travelling east on the A420, then south on the A350, onto the A4 to Corsham and eventually to Westlands Lane, Melksham.

The police escort was provided by volunteer police officers on rest days, paid for by the haulier at no cost to the public.
