A team of Year 5 pupils at The Mead Primary School in Trowbridge have planned and run their own cake sale in aid of the Born Free Foundation to support its work preserving the Ethiopian Wolf.

The school is focusing on developing pupils’ citizenship and is encouraging children to develop skills and attributes needed to be effective learners and good citizens in school, the community and the wider world.

They have been encouraged to take the initiative with learning, to take on responsibility and to help make the world a better place.

Six pupils – Wilf, Josh, Dan, Iwan, Isaac and Harry – did just that by organising a cake sale to raise money for the Born Free Foundation, which is an international conservation and animal rights organisation.

The boys said: “We wanted to do this cake sale because wolves such as the Ethiopian wolf are dying out fast.

“The main type of wolf we are trying to raise money for is the Ethiopian wolf because there are only 500 left in the wild.

“The reason why they are dying out is because of rabies. Other domestic dogs spread rabies which kills the Ethiopian wolves. We will donate the money we have raised to the Born Free Foundation to help save the wolves.”

The six boys planned the cake sale themselves, advertised the event with posters around the school designed and led a whole-school assembly to educate their friends about the animals.
