MORE than 7,000 extra train seats will be laid on for those runners descending upon Bath tomorrow for the 34th year of the city’s half marathon.

First Great Western will be operating an additional 25 trains in and out of the historic location, including many through Swindon during the day.

The race, which last year attracted 11,300 entrants, starts at 11am on Great Pulteney Street, and the western mainline operator has put on six additional early morning services to meet demand.

The first service out of Swindon to Bath Spa railway station will depart at 8.45am, with further services at 9.11am and 10.11am, although the latter will only allow passengers 20 minutes before race start.

For those quick enough, trains will run back to Swindon from 12.39pm and continue at 1.03pm, 1.39pm, 2.03pm, 2.39pm and 3.03pm.

The last service of the day to Swindon will depart Bath Spa at 10.23pm. With thousands of supporters as well as runners expected to be using the station for west and eastbound services, it is expected that queues will build up.

Todd Graham, Bath Spa station manager, said: “The Bath Half is one of the most beautiful city centre half-marathons on the running calendar, starting in Great Pulteney Street, and it is great to see it prove ever popular.

“While our friendly and approachable staff will be on hand to help keep people moving as people return to the station, I would urge customers to allow time for their journeys, as a queuing system may be needed to allow passengers to board trains in safety.”

The weather forecast does not make pleasant reading for runners and spectators, with light showers and high winds expected for much of the day in the Roman city.

Temperatures are expected to stick at 7oC or 8oC, but winds are anticipated at between 23mph and 26mph. However, visibility will be very good.
