WHORWELLSDOWN District Girl Guiding has launched two new units at Castle Mead Primary School for children in the Paxcroft and Hilperton area of Trowbridge after identifying a huge demand for places.

The group, which covers the areas of Steeple Ashton, Keevil, Edington, Paxcroft Mead, Hilperton, Holt and Atworth, had a number of children on the waiting list for both the Brownies and Rainbows.

As a result of the high demand in the area, the district group decided to open up two new units for Rainbows, aged five to seven, and Brownies, aged seven to ten, after consulting with the school and parents.

Children were enrolled as part of the new units last Thursday (Feb 26) and the district group is now appealing for volunteers to help run them as leaders on a rota basis.

Christine Glover, assistant guide leader, said: “As the majority of those waiting were in the Paxcroft Hilperton area, we decided to open up two units one for Rainbows and one for Brownies at the new school at Castlemead.

“We enrolled 14 new Rainbows and 11 Brownies and they are now ready to start taking part in the activities of their section’s programme.

“Ideally we would like to have new Leaders for these units and it is a wonderful opportunity for adults and parents to take over these new units or be a part of the leadership team.

“We do give good training and mentoring and it offers adults further opportunities within the guiding movement. It also looks really good on the CV.”
