Leisure centres to close on Tuesday

All six leisure centre in North Wiltshire will close on Tuesday.

It is understood a crunch meeting between the district council and its leisure arm decided this afternoon to keep the centres in Chippenham, Corsham, Calne, Malmesbury, Cricklade and Wootton Bassett open over the weekend so as not to disappoint customers.

"We don't know what is happening ourselves. No one has even told us what is going on. We are very worried about our jobs."

A member of staff at the Olympiad in Chipenham

The decision comes after North Wiltshire Leisure Ltd was put into administration by the district council after a private meeting of the executive committee yesterday evening.

The council and leisure trust are due to issue a statment later today giving more details.

Michael Buckley, chairman of North Wiltshire Leisure Ltd, emerged battered from his four hour talks with the North Wiltshire District Council but has told the Gazette that the centres will stay open for the weekend.

The debt-ridden trust was facing administration after the council refused to hand over any more money to prop it up and all six centres looked set to close tonight. But after lengthy negotiations today it is believed the centres will stay open for the weekend and close on Tuesday.

Mr Buckley said: "I see no reason why people cannot go to their swimming sessions on Saturday. Despite everything that is going on it is business as usual. I cannot comment on whether the centres will stay open beyond Monday but we will make a statement tomorrow if not tonight. "It is important to say that all the leisure centre staff members on the board have maintained dignity and professionalism in the face of some trying times."

North Wiltshire MP James Gray, said: "I think it is absolutely unbelievable. They seem to be making it up as they go along.

"Whether they close today or on Tuesday they have still made a complete shambles of the situations and confused many of my constituents who use the centres in Corsham, Wootton Bassett and Chippenham.

"We need some clarity and competence here."

A member of staff at the Olympiad Leisure Centre said the public have been ringing in all day wanting to know whether their memberships will still be valid.

"We don't know what is happening ourselves," she said. "No one has even told us what is going on, we are very worried about our jobs."

She said staff have no idea what to tell people ringing in for help and advice.

Sports clubs spoke of their anguish at the news.

Tim Magnus, chairman of Wootton Bassett Otters who use the Lime Kiln Centre, said: "We are happy there is a long term future but it is a small crisis as we have people who train three days a week.

"There is also the Wiltshire County Championships coming up next month and if swimmers aren't training all hope for doing well goes out of the window.

"All the other pools are full and with a month without any training you would lose form rather quick."

Magnus was also concerned with the affect the closures would have on younger swimmers.

He said: "It will also hit the kids who are learning to swim. The whole point of learning is that you repeat it and keep learning, which they wouldn't be able to do."

DC Leisure is due to take over on Friday, March 30 but Magnus is worried about how long the transition will take.

He said: "If they shut for a month what would be left for DC leisure to take over?

"If the pools have to be drained and anything else done, would DC leisure be in a position to open or would it be another month while they get things sorted."

Jon Dodsworth, chairman of Calne Sub Aqua Club, was angry after discovering the news.

"I'm gobsmacked, just as a rescue package was coming together they cut us off," he said.

"Just a couple of days ago I was talking to staff and they were saying they were hopeful.

"It is surprising they couldn't have given any notice what so ever."

Dodsworth was damming on North Wiltshire Leisure Ltd and felt they want to ditch their responsibilities. "It is just another example of mismanagement. It is always drastic and immediate, they must have know this was coming," he said.

"They would like to wash their hands of the whole thing and vanish.

"It is so unfair on the staff because they are good people and don't deserve this. "

Joint chairman of Calne Alpha 4 swimming club, Nicki Marshallsay, was understandably furious at the events of the last 24 hours.

"It has been coming for a long time and they have kept us in the dark," she said.

"There is more than enough cause for various heads to roll as they have not been up front with anyone and know much more than they have let on.

"They promised they were going to be upfront with people and they haven't been and it makes everyone lose trust."

Marshallsay assured members they would have a place to swim even if the White Horse closed on Tuesday.

She said: "If we have to go somewhere else then we can, we might not be able to jump in the pool on Wednesday as we might have to wait a week but we will not close."

As a rate payer I suggest the executive committee all resign.

in addition to my comments already logged, i would like to add that being half term is a very devious time to choose. This has been on the cards for a while and as a community we must all make sure that in the may elections the council are made to pay for this serious breach of trust.

NWDC never fail to amaze me, its time for grim reaper to the executive committee. and we do need to know who not to vote for in the forthcoming may elections. so where can the lists be found.

The Council have an utter lack of understanding, respect and comprehension at the desperate situation that the 6 leisure centres in North Wiltshire are facing. They have put political spin on their comments to the press to disguise their gross mismanagement of leisure provision in this area.

Moreover, the pathetic comments that James Gray has made to the Gazette and Herald proves that he is as much an ignorant moron as an adulterous cheat!

its a utter disgrace, all communities will lose, what will the decision makers lose - votes. my family will suffer considerably. swimming is my childrens life. the decision makers should meet the young centre users and tell them what they have done. why waste more effort for a local oylmpic village, when there is nothing left for the community.

This is really stupid I wanted to do my distance swim on next saturday and now suddenly they have decided to close the swimming centres. The council got us into this mess because at the time this was the cheapest thing for them so now they should get us out of this mess.

I dont believe this, what exactly are we supposed to do at this short notice for child care for half term. I think we should all meet at the council offices on Monday and take our kids for them to look after for a week seeing they have taken the facility away. The kids will probably run the department better anyway

What happens to all the monies already paid for swimming lessons and Activa membership? I also like the comment from Trace in Corsham - great!!

How can 6 leisure centres close when the government is constantly telling us that they want to promote a healthy lifestyle for children? We are to host the Olympics yet can't appear to provide basic sporting facilities for our children. Are we to then be surprised when this country fails to achieve on a world stage in sport. There are few enough provisions for young people as it is. For those children who use the facilities at the sports centre they have had a valuable resource taken away with nothing offered in its place. I think that they situation has been poorly handled, I really sympathise with the conscientious staff who were working as normal this morning despite the devastating news. All credit to their professionalism which seems to be sadly lacking in those that have made this decision

Need a new place to train? A member of the GYM uk management team will be available, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday to discuss membership switch from the Activa sites within NWLL. Any current Activa member worried about alternative training facilities should come along to the GYM uk on Bumpers Farm and discuss further.

Pathetic Gym uk, Chippenham says...
5:38pm Sat 17 Feb 07

Scott Mackay, you are a disgrace! GYM uk is a farce. The most unwelcoming facility I have ever visited. Your staff couldnt be bothered and had no interest in the individuals that unfortunately train there. U never run classes, the layout of the gym is ridiculous and your staff couldn't be less kowledgeable if they tried. I had the most dreadful experience at your facility, yet was welcomed and looked after by the brilliant instructors at Springfield Leisure Centre. I have trained at the Olympiad as well and have always been lokked after and not made to feel as though I dont belong.

So seeing you use the leisure centres siuation as an opportunity to try and market your failing facility is sad and pathetic.

So to anyone thinking of spending your money with Gym uk, dont bother it is a waste of time and a waste of money.

I have just started a new Yahoo forum Group called Pooling Resources for swimming pool campaigners across the country, precisely because this sort of event is happening all the time, in different ways right across Britain. This message service doesn't support web addresses, but the address for all Yahoo groups is the same, apart from the last section which gives the name of the group:
poolingresources. Please join and you can then reach a wider audience. Daventry residents have just seen their Outdoor pool bulldozed and turned into a car park; in Yarmouth the Marina Sports Centre and pool may be replaced by a casino, and so on.

Everyone needs to be at council offices/olympiad at 9am monday when board meets-we are all going to be unemployed at 10pm monday if noone takes on the company-and yes cricklade and white horse are closing anyway on monday night no matter what-and the council have been very unhelpful where staff are concerned and even if dc leisure take it on still 100 of us are being made redundant-and at the moment if they close monday at 10pm and we have been told is a big possibility then 400 will be unemployed and noone will be paid for this month or redundant payments paid-all down to the council and lack of communication from the council.....theres a surprise. All to save face for the elections!-this has been planned to do do since before Christmas-there never was a repreve for the sites closing or reduntancys

If you want to show support for the STAFF aswell-MEET 9AM council offices MONDAY-Tv cameras will be there to-just still wondering how the heck Im going to pay morgage next month.Mormally atleast you get some notice of redunantcy-weve had no support and mostly hear about whats happening once its in the press.Yet we still have to keep the centres going and today-even though we could be unpaid and out of work tomorrow.

I urge people to resist the profitering pleas from Scott Mackay.

I turned up a the GYM on Bumpers Farm one afternoon to look around. I was ignored by staff for about 15 minutes before I got bored and left.

To give them the benefit of a second chance, I tried an RPM class one evening as the Olympiad was fully booked. The class can be best described pathetic (instructor, equipment and music) and over priced. I will not be going again.

I also found a "posers" attitude in the place that you don't find at the Olympiad.

It is staggering that a well attended community leisure centre can ever be mismanaged to a position where closure is even discussed never mind being a reality.

We will probably find the council supporting the creation of an obesity clinic. The fat kids will then be told to get more exercise.

Community leisure facilities are an investment in our future and the compound health of generations to come. Every possible effort should be made to keep the centres alive and open.

Are the accounts for the leisure centres published ? I would be interested to see what the real costs are with respect to the percentage of council budget.

Calne resident, Calne says...
1:19pm Sun 18 Feb 07

ALL residents of North Wiltshire have been grossly let down by NWDC. The Council has failed to upkeep, and plan for leisure provision in the short, medium and long term. Ensuring facilities for us, our children and their children. When NWLL took over running the centres the coundil must have rubbed their hands together, walked away and buried their heads in the sand.
If other councils throughout the country have planned for the future to provide new leisure facilities to take over from ol facilities why has NWDC negleted to do this? Rotherham, Yorkshire is currently building 4 new leisure facilities to take over from old ones. Is that not partly why we pay our council tax? Residents of North Wiltshire deserve an answer. Staff will lose their jobs, pay, redundancy money, their homes. How will they pay their bills? What do they do after Monday sign on the dole?
Many customers ude the centre for many different reasons and the closures will greatly impact negatively on their daily routines and lives.
School children will not have the chance to go swimming as part of their Curriculum and some may not have the opportunity to learn to swim at all!!!!
Customers who use the centres to keep fit for life will suffer. Especially those who have medical conditions who use the centres to make their life bearable and help hasten their recovery. Sports people training for competitions what will they do how will they reach their goals. It tragic for Sports development in the county at any level.
How will NWDC provide facilities to carry out the Government initiatives to combat Obesity, Type 2 diabetes and heart disease etc. not only in adults but children? GP Referral schemes, Falls prevention initiatives......... and so on.
A public enquiry is needed to give answers to why:
a. Why the Centres were not monitored by the council from day one.
b. why nothing was done when it started to go wrong more than 3 years ago when they were informed of the situation?
c. If DC Leisure step in what can it achieve in 18 months without a large cash input and drastic changes?
(The council has already had advice from NWLL, Wycome Leisure, Strategic Leisure!!! How much more advice is needed before the drops and they formulate ajrealistic plan of action and stop wasting tax payers money?)
d. Why did the council turn down the 3 year recovery plan (no debt after 3 years) that WLL put forward?
e. Are they going to tell us why they turned down Cricklade and the White Horse Leisure Centre rescue plans down? Will they reconsider and work with the industry partners to save the centres for the said communities?
It seems that too much talking is going on behind closed doors and too many meetings about previous meetings are taking place. Information is being discussed and proposals from external providers are being swept under the carpet. It all needs to be in the public domain and let the residents vote and decide what they want for their communities and future generations because NWDC don't come across as being in touch with reality for the general public.

We all know how much we like being 'ripped off'! - Leisure provision is a service and is included in our contributions of Council Tax. If we get no leisure provision, surely we do not have to pay for the service!!! The staff at White Horse Leisure are like a family extension to my family - some have been there for years and progressed in their positions; the younger ones are always friendly and ameniable. To see so many liable to be sat in Chippenham Jobcentre on Tuesday morning (which they need to do, regardless of any 'possible' offer of employment) is not a sight I look forward to. If the centre does close (we hope it won't) it'll be utter devastation to Calne. Everyone thought it was bad when Harris' closed - this will be on the same scale as there will be nowhere for families to meet and partake various sports. It's great to meet up with people in a leisurely environment and it was fantastic to see parents of swimmers from 15 years ago supporting the centre and staff at the meeting held on 16th February. We oldies do know how much time and effort is put in not only by the staff, participating youngsters and themselves to encourage improvement and a better lifestyle. Good luck everyone for 19th - see you at 8pm at the White Horse Leisure Centre.

The only reason James Gray got involved was to ensure he got re-elected to his seat after being caught with his pants down while his wife was very ill. It is clear that you people do not understand politicians. The agreement to close Leisure Centres was from a cross party group, not just the Lib Dems. Get the facts not the spin

10:52pm Sun 18 Feb 07

I agree with 'Get informed'. Politicl spin has everything to do with how the leisure situation has been reported in the press and the manner in which NWDC have tried to distance themselves from the fallout. A basic prerequisite of being a politician at any level involves them being slippery mongrels who able to use the phrase ' it wasn't me' and 'i din't do it' on repeat. All parties are responsible and accountable which leaves a burng questions of who the **** to vote for in May's elections? James Grey's obvious committment is to his genitals and who knows what Labours and the Lib Den candidates think with, chance is that it would not be their brains!
