RESIDENTS are being urged to think before they drop litter as Wiltshire Council workers head out on a new litter-picking initiative, costing taxpayers around £120,000.
The council has just started an additional litter pick from the verges of all rural roads in Wiltshire, including Cricklade and Royal Wootton Bassett.
Philip Whitehead, cabinet member for highways, said the money should not have to be spent.
“The money we are spending to clear the litter from verges because of the anti-social actions of some inconsiderate people could be put to much better use maintaining vital services,” he said.
“We cannot afford to keep clearing up after people.
“The key message is that if we all do our bit by not littering our streets and get involved by keeping our communities clean we can make a big difference.
“We would like to help local communities in litter-picking activities. Any community group, business or resident wanting to work with us, can get in touch.”
The council has some litter equipment it can loan out and will also supply black bags and arrange the collection of litter following a litter-picking event. Contact the council on 0300 456 0105.
