REGULARS at the Free Shop at Savernake Street Social Hall celebrated the initiative’s second birthday this weekend.

On Saturday(may2) the committee of the hall in Savernake Street, off Eastcott Hill, celebrated two years of recycling and reusing.

On the first Saturday of each month between 12pm and 2pm the hall is transformed into a pop-up emporium, with tables packed with books, games, bric-a-brac and crockery, clothes on rails, pictures propped against the walls and even small items of furniture. A plant and seed swap is also planned for the next Free Shop in June.

All the items on display have been brought along by residents who no longer need them, and are passing their treasures on to new homes. Many people who come and donate also take something home, but people can bring, take or both — all for free.

The concept was first launched in May 2013 by Eastcott residents Rachel Rance and Jon Timbrell, who moved to the town from Bath where they had successfully established and run a free shop.

Supported by Eastcott Community Organisation, the group of volunteers that manage Savernake Street Social Hall, the Free Shop has grown and flourished.

“We have had so many positive comments, and many people have said it’s a regular event in their diary which is brilliant,” said Rachel.

“It’s a great way to recycle, reuse, and share things that we no longer need. There’s a really quick turnover of items, so there’s something new every time.”

The Free Shop concept has proved very popular over the years, with around 150 people visiting each month and thousands of items changing hands since it started.

Members of Eastcott Community Organisation feel it is ahas been a very successful way for people to meet up and socialise too.

A spokesman said: “It has turned into a lovely social event, an extra opportunity for our community to sit together and have a cup of tea and a chat. We are really proud to be involved and see how it has become an integral part of the community centre’s events.”

Anything can be brought to exchanged at the free shop, except for electrical items, nightwear and VHS videos. Items donated must be in good condition. For details e-mail eastcottcommunity@yahoo.co.uk
