A MAN wanted by police for failing to attend court handed himself in after two months, because he wanted to ‘get a Greggs’ without being worried about being arrested.

Charlie Gunning, 19, Warminster Road, Westbury, visited the reception of Trowbridge Police Station first thing on Monday morning and handed himself in to police two months after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

He had failed to attend court after being charged with theft back in March. Police arrested him and he appeared in court later that day, and was released on bail.

But police at the station in Polebarn Road admitted he made them laugh when they asked him why he had finally decided to give himself up.

A message on the Trowbridge Neighbourhood Policing Team Facebook page said: “When asked why he chose to hand himself in now after two months of being ‘on the run’, he replied: ‘I just want to be able to walk through town and get a Greggs without looking over my shoulder all the time’.”

Police added: “Charlie, enjoy your future Greggs, and thank you for doing the right thing – and making us laugh at the same time.”
