YOUNG Trowbridge musician Katherine Stonham triumphed in Devizes at the weekend when she won the final of the Young Musician of Wiltshire competition.

The-16-year-old violinist beat six other young musicians to come first in the competition organised by the Devizes Eisteddfod.

Katherine won a prize of £100 plus a Young Musician of Wiltshire trophy at the final held in the town hall on Saturday.

Michael Johnson, director of Devizes Eisteddfod said: “The evening went really well and we had some first class performances watch by an audience of about 120 people.

“The judges said it was a very close competition and I think Katherine won as she played a very mature piece and captured everyone’s imaginations.”

The competition was judged by Christopher Moore, Sharon Gould and Richard Hickman with Warminster pianist Vincent Ling, 14, coming second and Chippenham bassoon player Emma Williams, 13, coming third.

The Eisteddfod hopes to present another Young Musician Competition in May 2017 with a second Young Choir of Wiltshire competition taking placing next April or May.

This year’s Eisteddfod will be held in a number of venues in the town on November 13 and 14.

This will be the largest in the Eisteddfod’s 69 year history with more than 140 classes covering music, drama, speech, art, literature and photography.
