THE re-opening of the Pear Tree in Whitley, near Melksham, has been delayed by four months until September.

The pub in Top Lane has been closed for nearly a year, after celebrity chef Marco Pierre White decided to shut it last September, having owned it for three years.

In February, owners Punch Taverns said they were in advance stages of negotiations and it would re-open in May.

However, a Punch Taverns spokesman has now said the opening date had been postponed but thousands of pounds will be spent on revamping the building.

They added: “Whilst negotiations with interested parties took longer than expected, we are pleased to confirm that a £300,000 investment will commence at the Pear Tree on August 10.

“We anticipate that the works will be concluded and the new look Pear Tree will re-open by the end of September bringing the pub back to the heart of the community.”

The pub has also been made a community asset by Wiltshire Council after Melksham Without Parish Council applied for it to have the status earlier this year.
