Rail travel in Wiltshire has been looked into by the overview and scrutiny committee of Wiltshire County Council after concerns expressed by local people.

The members discussed issues such as fare increases, overcrowding and reduced services. These have been blamed by passengers on the new train timetable introduced in December by First Great Western, having taken over the franchise for train services in the region.

It is written into the franchise agreement with the Government that, by January 2008, the total number of seats in the regional train fleet will have reduced by 7,387.

It is believed that this will have an impact on services in Wiltshire on the Cardiff to Portsmouth and Bedwyn to London trains.

From December 2007 the Department for Transport will cease to support the First Great Western local trains between Westbury and Southampton and instead will support a Southampton to Salisbury service.

This leaves a gap in service between Westbury and Salisbury.

The open returns that are required for occasional travel in the peak periods have considerably increased in price, while long distance season tickets to London are regulated fares.

Members heard that First Great Western have responded to some of the concerns with minor changes and improvements.

Unfortunately the county council has no direct power over the rail industry, however it will continue to push for a solution that mitigates the impacts where possible, including working with others to make the case for Wiltshire.

Jeff Osborn, chair of the overview and scrutiny committee, said: "It is important that continued pressure is applied on First Great Western and the government over poor performance as a result of the new franchise timetable.

"As such, the scrutiny role of the county council is vital in allowing elected members to gain a greater understanding of the issues and represent the concerns of the public."

As well as a potential gap in service between Westbury and Salisbury from December 2007 , there is already a gap in service between Westbury and Swindon , caused by the withdrawal of 60% of the trains in December 2006.

Why not introduce a Swindon - Salisbury service?

The most logical service to provide would be a Swindon to Salisbury via Westbury, linking the five largest centres of population in Wiltshire.

This through service was TOTALLY WITHDRAWN last December ... and usage of the new connecting services from Swindon (at 06:19 and 18:42) has dropped by 95% - probably because of the inappropriate timing of this vestigial service.

Rather than look at each individual cut - December 2006, December 2007, and what for December 2008, I wonder ... I would encourage our County Council to look at the services as a whole and press for them to be returned to an appropriate level.

Wiltshire County Council are in a bid to become a unitary authority. How can this county function as a whole when it is so difficult to get from one end to another? Better transport links will improve the local economy, attract business to the county and relieve pressure on the already over-crowded roads. My sister lives in Chippenham and I live in Salisbury. I can get one direct train there a day and none back. How is this be acceptable in this day and age? With county services already moving from Trowbridge to Chippenham it is even more important that links between north and south are improved. The government and FGW need to address the TransWilts problem immediately.

WCC come on work with all parties and let get a better train service via Melksham, running at times we want not as First seem to want to run them.
Global Warming seems to be coming sooner lets use the train more & leave you car at home.
People can not use train from Melksham if they working Swindon or Bristol as the times are not working, with passanger numbers dropped. I think first do not want to run this service as it is not just for folks in Melksham, I know alot of people from Westbury/Frome/Trowbridge work in Swindon and like the direct train via Melksham as this saves 30/40 minutes if they have to travel via Bath Spa.

I regularly get the train from Melksham to work in central London. Since the reduction in services in Dec 06 I no longer find the times convienient and have noticed the dramatic reduction in passengers, indicating that many others also find the times inconvienient. This makes me think that an improved service would result in more custom - surly something that should be encoraged if government really beleives what it preaches about improving public transport to save the planet!

In my unhappy experience, the train service in this area is a mess. Those with the power to make changes need to take responsibility and make serious improvements. We have had far too much buck-passing, to the detriment of passengers and commitments to reducing road travel.

Overcrowded on some services with only 2 carriages then empty on others with 4 carriages??? Somebody need to be looking at this and sorting it out. Why do we pay increased ticket prices for services that are getting worse? I came back from Salisbury-Trowbridge at 4pm a few weeks ago, only 3 carriages but it was packed ,like cattle!! No room to move ,we were having to get out to let people leave the train, then get back on! Squashed together, total disreguard for Health and Safety!!!! Get your act together!!!!!!
