A MOREDON man spoke of his horror after he witnessed a car fire through his living room window.

Brian Fisher was alerted to the Shanklin road fire on Monday afternoon after he smelled burning, which he initially thought was his neighbours enjoying an early summer barbecue.

“Suddenly I thought that can’t be a barbecue, it smells like burning rubber,” said the 65-year-old of The Street.

“I looked out of the window and saw thick black and grey smoke rising over the houses. I was shocked.

“I came outside and saw a car parked on the wrong side of the road and completely destroyed, surrounded by firemen. It looks like the owner just parked up and ran scared. I’m so glad no one was in the car.”

Retired Brian, who worked at BMW, believes the car was a series three model and about 12 to 15 years old.

A crew from Wiltshire Fire And Rescue attended the scene and no-one was injured in the incident.

A spokesman said: “We received a call at 4.30pm to report of a saloon-type car that was on fire.

"One fire crew attended the scene and breathing apparatus and two hose reels were used.

"The fire was extinguished by 5pm with crews leaving the scene at 5.30pm.

"The cause of the fire was put down to a faulty fuel supply. Swindon Borough Council were called to remove the car.”

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “Wiltshire Police received a call at 5.02pm yesterday from the fire service, who were dealing with a car fire in Shanklin Road, Moredon. The car was causing an obstruction in the road, and police were called once the fire had been dealt with, to deal with traffic flow in the area.”
