THOUSANDS are expected to flock to the annual equestrian extravaganza Barbury International Horse Trials next week, featuring over 1,150 riders and horses.

Set on the Marlborough Downs the horse trials are renowned as one of the jewels in the crown of the British eventing calendar and runs from 9-12 July.

Across the four days, an exciting line up of the world’s top riders will be competing in the novice and two star classes, as well as the prestigious three star competition, which culminates on Sunday with the cross country.

This year, Marlborough based New Zealander Andrew Nicholson and his grey named Avebury are aiming for a historic quintet of consecutive wins in the three star class.

Away from the equine activity, there will be a shopping village featuring nearly sixty retailers ranging from equestrian, fashion and leisure clothing, well-being, arts and rural crafts. Additionally there is fun for all the family with the popular sheep show as well as plenty of children's entertainment.

Further highlights across the weekend include the JCB Champions Challenge in aid of the Injured Jockeys Funs on Saturday, where AP McCoy is poised to ride for the first time in public since retiring in April.

Joining his team are fellow jump jockeys, Richard Johnson, Sam Twiston-Davies and Wayne Hutchinson. Andrew Nicholson leads the eventers, and he will be joined by Sir Mark Todd and two of Britain's finest rider's Harry Meade and Tina Cook. British showjumping classes will also feature.

Nigel Bunter, chairman of the Barbury International Horse Trials said: "The event site at Barbury is coming together and we are looking forward to hopefully another great four days. We believe Barbury offers the first timer an exceptional experience, with excellent viewing of the cross-country and an opportunity to really get to know the sport of eventing and we look forward to welcoming everyone."
