Pull on your wellies and dig out your tent! It’s summer festival season and there’s everything from 1980s retro to world music to entertain you. FLICKY HARRISON reports

Reading Festival

Amid the mud, glorious mud, festival-goers can star spot some top names headlining the season’s circuit at the Reading Festival. Metallica, Mumford and Sons, Bring Me The Horizon and The Libertines are all there, along with up and coming bands such as Los Angeles pop band Ecosmith on the BBC Radio 1 stage and The One Hundred in The Pit on the Saturday.

The One Hundred got together in 2013, a core metal band that have won acclaim in a very short space of time notching up fans at Sonisphere, Merthyr Rock and Hevy festivals including Zane Lowe and Dan P Carter from BBC Radio 1 rock show.

Cornbury Music Festival

For a more family-style festival, check out the silver fox Tom Jones at Cornbury. Cornbury Music Festival is at the Great Tew Estate, Chipping Norton, which runs from Friday, July 10, to Sunday, July 12.

The festival, that disguises itself as a summer carnival, has acts including Razorlight, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Blue and comedian Katherine Ryan. For more details visit www.cornburyfestival.com

Larmer Tree Festival

Tom Jones also headlines at Larmer Tree Festival, which takes place in the Larmer Tree Gardens, near Salisbury, from Tuesday, July 14 to Sunday, July 19.

Celebrating 25 years of making music, the festival, founded by James Shepard in 1990, has a host of top names joining Sir Tom, including Swindon’s own Gaz Brookfield, The Magic Numbers, Jimmy Cliff, Levellers, Bill Bailey, Bellowhead, Show of Hands and Coco & The Butterfields. Priddy Festival

For folk fans, The Priddy Festival features BBC Two Folk Musician of the Year Sam Sweeney, from folk band Bellowhead. Sam will be bringing his new band Leveret to Priddy.

Also playing are Wolfstone, Nizlopi and Dick Gaughan. Priddy village is about 15 miles from Bath and Bristol on the Wells Road, and the festival runs from Friday, July 10, to Sunday, July 12. For more details visit priddyfolk.org.

WOMAD

A ticket to WOMAD is a chance to take a trip around the world in music, with artists from Soweto, the Congo, Columbia, Slovenia, The Balkans, France, Chile, America, Cambodia, Mongolia, Jamaica and home grown talent from the UK. Headliners for this year include De La Soul, Tinariwen, Ghostpoet, Bellowhead and Atomic Bomb. The Music of William Onyeabor.

Marlborough International Jazz Festival

The small market town of Marlborough is jazzed up for an international festival each year, attracting the cream of the crop from the jazz world. And this year is no different, with Alexander Bone, the Young Jazz Musician of the Year, bringing his band to the Marlborough International Jazz Festival. Also in the line-up is Leon Atkins, aka Lil Jimmy Reed, who was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2014.

Getting saxy will be an old favourite of the festival, saxophonist Gilad Atzman, and Darius Brubeck, son of the legendary Dave Brubeck, will be returning along with another stalwart, the Rolling Stones lead singer’s brother, Chris Jagger. Headlining the jazz weekend will be Elkie Brooks.

Fairport’s Cropredy Convention

Toyah Wilcox joins the merry men and women invited to perform at this year’s Fairport’s Cropredy Convention. The former punk princess has now won her place among the music luminaries selected by folk rock legends Fairport Convention at the Oxfordshire festival.

She joins a line-up including Fish, the former lead singer of Marillion, The Proclaimers, Level 42, Dreadzone and a number of special surprise guests who simply ‘pop up’ in traditional Cropredy style.

The Village Pump Festival

More folk royalty comes to the Village Pump Festival with Dave Swarbrick and Martin Carthy. The Strawbs have had to pull out because Dave Cousins has suffered an accident and Keston Cobblers Club, who have just released acclaimed new album Wildfire, replace them.

Festival patrons Show of Hands will be recording a live album of their Saturday night concert and old favourites the Oysterband are also on the bill. Rewind South

There’s a touch of back to the future at Rewind South, The 80s Festival, when OMD, Billy Ocean and Kim Wilde headline at Temple Island Meadows in Henley.

Truckfest

Swindon DJs MC Neat and DJ Luck are heading for Truckfest, which rumbles down on the farm from Friday, July 17, to Saturday, July 18. Headlining the festival on Friday night are the Charlatans and Clean Bandit and Slaves, while the Saturday sees Basement Jaxx, up and coming Ghostpoet, Peter Hook and the Light, Pulled Apart By Horses and pioneer of chamber pop Rae Morris.

2000 Trees

2000Trees has twice won the Grass Roots Festival of the year. Punk rock giants Alkaline Trio are jetting in from America to headline this year’s event at Upcote Farm, near Cheltenham.

The green festival runs from Friday, July 9 to Sunday, July 11. WrdeUp Festival

A nostalgic trip down memory lane is on the cards in Highworth on July 11 with Dr and the Medics set to headline WrdeUp music festival. Fronted by the Rev Dr Clive Jackson, the psychedelic rock band enjoyed success in the 1980s, and is best known for its cover of Norman Greenbaum’s Spirit in the Sky.
