GET set, ready, style – battle lines will be drawn at Sue Ryder stores across the region as fashion-forward shoppers go head to head to put together a winning outfit.

The charity’s shops in Swindon, Highworth and Wootton Bassett have teamed up with their sister branches further afield to raise £5,000 towards the national Incredible Nurses appeal.

As part of the fundraising campaign, the organisation, which provides hospice and neurological care for people facing a life-changing diagnosis, is aiming to secure £250,000.

Keen to make the appeal one of the area’s most successful to date, Swindon Brunel shop manager Terry Corbridge hatched a cunning plan.

From Monday until August 22, shoppers at any of the local charity stores will be invited to showcase their flair by combing the clothing racks and dressing a mannequin donated by luxury department store Harrods to be in for a chance of winning £50 of Sue Ryder vouchers.

But there is a catch. Challengers must assemble a full outfit, accessories and all, with items worth £15 or less.

They will also need to pay £1 to enter the competition.

“It can be quite daunting being asked to raised £5,000 in a month and trying to come up with new fundraising ideas all the time as well as run your own store,” said the 28 year-old from Old Town. “So when they told us about the Incredible Nurses campaign, we didn’t want to do another raffle. Harrods had donated 1,000 mannequins to Sue Ryder so I came up with the idea for the competition.

“There used to be this stigma attached to second-hand shops but I think it’s changing. Some of our stores specialise in vintage.

“It gives people the opportunity to do something fun and for us, there will be a bit of friendly competition between stores.”

Each amateur stylist will be photographed with his or her mannequin. Shop managers at the region’s 18 branches will pour over the images, and whittle the shortlist down to ten stunning looks.

The winner will be handpicked by Swindon-based beauty expert and TV personality Gina Akers on August 31.

Jen Furmage, Devizes store manager, will be in charge of collecting photographs ahead of judging.

“I am really excited to be getting everyone involved,” said the 27-year-old. “It’s a fun summer activities for everyone, teenagers, parents and children. People can get digging through the rails; it’s definitely doable in under £15. We want to see people’s individual style. It’s fun but it’s still a fashion challenge.”

Contestant will be able to tweet, instagram or post the fruit of their labour on Facebook with the hashtag #mySRManny.
