HUNDREDS of vehicles descended upon a town centre car park on Saturday in one final tribute to the spiritual home of Swindon’s modified car scene.

Wyvern Car Park, in Islington Street, will be demolished later this year and drivers from as far as Bristol and London wanted to pay their respects.

Jamie Antal, 27, a retail supervisor of Beaulieu Close, Toothill, said: “When I heard it was going to be closed, we knew we needed to give it a bit of a send off.”

He is a member of the Swindon-based Because Car Enthusiasts and set up the weekend rendezvous for a static meet, which allowed car and bike modifiers to assess each other’s designs and enhancements.

Jamie, who turned up on his Suzuki GSX-R600 motorcycle, has always associated the tight turns and low ceilings of the multi-storey with the Fast And Furious movie franchise.

“It’s the atmosphere in there,” he said. “It reminds me of the movies. I’ve seen it in that way since I was little. It just amazed me as a place for cars.

“A lot of people have a lot of fond memories there.

Jamie said the car park has historically been a home to the modified scene since the Mod subculture which revolved around Lambrettas and Vespas.

“The meeting gives everyone a chance to have a catch up and a laugh,” he said.

“We all pump a lot of money into cars, so this is a nice opportunity for us to have a look at them.”

Wiltshire Police ensured there was no disturbance other than a Honda Civic hitting a signpost. A spokesman said: “A 21-year-old from Abingdon, has been invited for interview in relation to his driving.”
