JAMIE Vincent has snarled step it up' to his colleagues ahead of a scripted finale to Town's campaign.

The stand-in skipper feels his team have the chance to secure memories that will last a lifetime, but only if they can get the sluggishness out of their system that proved so costly against Bristol Rovers.

A slow start proved very very costly and Vincent, like his manager, was far from happy.

He said: "We've done it a few times in the past. Maybe in the back of our minds the party was there but I don't think so.

"We're professional enough to put it on hold until it's mathematically impossible to be caught.

"It isn't possible at the moment so we go on to next week and try and get the three points.

"It's still in our hands, that's the crucial thing. If we had to rely on other teams who knows what happens?"

As for the goal that separated the two sides at the Memorial Stadium, Vincent said: "It was a great goal.

"Nothing much Phil (Smith) could do about it. It's one of those goals where you have to hold your hands up and say well done.

"In the second half we had a couple of chances and put them under pressure.

"I don't think Phil had a save to make in the second half but they held on for the win.

"The manager wasn't happy at all. He's well within his rights."

One last chance remains to get across the finishing line when Walsall arrive at the County Ground.

Vincent said: "I think it's going to be like a cup tie.

"I think there's going to be a lot of passion involved, a lot of talking, we're fighting for promotion, they're fighting for the championship.

"It would have been nice going into a game where the championship was sewn up but we have to fight as if we're staying in the league if you like.

"We need to give everything we've got. The fans have been fantastic throughout the season following us around.

"It's a shame we couldn't do over their rivals here.

"Again, they will be the 12th man if they turn up in the numbers that they have been lately.

"It's a massive game and let's just hope all the lads are up for the occasion. Everyone has got to step up, step up a level because today wasn't good enough."

The equation is simple. Win or draw and the party gets underway. Lose and the consequences are unthinkable.

Vincent said: "If that doesn't push us on I don't think anything else will. Everyone knows what they've got to do.

"Everyone knew what they had to do against Bristol Rovers but it didn't happen.

"Let's hope on Saturday everyone does it for 90 minutyes because the first 45 against Rovers was poor."

But Vincent is trying to be positive as well as dishing out a warning.

He said: "We have got that cushion. We need to put in a performance, last home game of the season, for ourselves, everyone at the club, the fans.

"What a day it will be if we put in a performance against the team who are going for the league and we beat them. "It would be a great way of getting promoted.

"I think it's set for us. I think that's the story, it's set for us to beat them."
