JANE AUSTEN visited Swindon Register Office this week as a couple tied the knot in a Pride and Prejudice themed ceremony.

Newlyweds Uan and Rebecca Harrison, of Freshbrook, said their vows dressed as brooding Mr Darcy and the high-spirited Elizabeth Bennet from the classic 1813 novel.

Uan, 33, said he was on cloud nine to be finally wed to his Elizabeth.

“People say that getting married doesn’t change anything, but it feels completely different knowing that we’re together for life, it’s a fantastic feeling,” he said.

“She looked amazing and we’re just so happy.”

Social worker Rebecca, 29, added: “It was like a dream and all my dreams came true when we married.”

The complex love story, which is Rebecca’s favourite novel and TV series, inspired real-life Darcy Uan to get down on one knee in February at Lydiard Mansion, dressed in breeches, riding boots, gold waistcoat and dress-shirt, to give his fiancée the proposal of her dreams.

Uan went to painstaking lengths to give Rebecca the perfect proposal – even wooing her with the same speech Darcy gives Elizabeth in the book – which he memorised during his lunch breaks during work as a teaching assistant at a school for disabled children.

Rebecca revealed she picked up her green wedding dress online after searching for the perfect Elizabeth Bennet-esque frock.

“The dress was an exact replica of the dress worn in the TV series, I always knew I wanted to get married wearing something like that and it was just perfect, it was just how I imagined,” Rebecca said.

The happy couple held the ceremony in private with plans to hold a party for close family and friends next week.

“We just wanted to do something that was just us where we could focus on being together,” Rebecca said.

Uan and Rebecca are now enjoying a honeymoon in the Forest of Dean before their main celebration at the Twigs Community Gardens next Saturday.

The couple will hold a hand-astening ceremony incorporating Jane Austen’s novel, complete with a first dance to the theme from the 2005 movie adaptation.

Rebecca revealed the couple’s passions will put a unique twist on their wedding vows.

“We’ve written our own vows - mine are Pride and Prejudice themed and his are from Star Trek which works quite well together,” she said.

The couple have been together for three years after meeting through work and recently moved into their first family home together – together with Rebecca’s children Archie and Florence and Uan’s daughter Matilda,

Archie will act as joint best man with Uan’s friend Ben Biddiscombe.
