VILLAGERS came out in support of the annual Southwick Show on Bank Holiday Monday, despite initial fears that the event would have to be cancelled due to the weather.

It is the second year in a row that the weather has played havoc with the show, which is based at Southwick Village Hall and playing field, but fortunately the rain relented in the afternoon and families were able to enjoy the activities on offer.

Among the entertainment was the popular dog agility show, while there was also live music, ferret racing, crockery smashing, a coconut shy and a reptile display for visitors.

The flower and vegetable show was also well supported in all the different categories, with the overall Challenge Shield won by Ben Rawlings, closely followed by Angela Messam.

Chair of the organising committee Chris Rawlings said: “The day started wet and gloomy and while we were setting up in the rain we debated whether we should cancel or go on anyway.

“However, our volunteers showed us the way and we decided that the show must go on. We set up shop as if the sun was shining, erected marquees and gazebos and the supporters came out.

“At 1pm Trevor Heeks opened the show in the dry as it had thankfully stopped raining. As the day progressed, we had more and more people come along and as I looked around there were smiling faces wherever I looked.

“Although some of the main ring entertainment didn’t take place, we still had lots for people to enjoy, with ferret racing and crockery smashing games all raising funds for the show.”

Other trophies in the flower and vegetable competition were won by Sue Rawlings (baking and flower arranging), Sarah Hitch (preserves), Sally Taylor (flowers) and Alan Baker (craft work).

Mr Rawlings added: “The flower and vegetable show was well supported in all categories and there were some really good exhibits on show. We also had some great entries from Southwick Primary School’s gardening club.

“Hopefully if we have covered our costs, we will have raised enough to donate to the British Legion and other local charities and groups within the village. I must thank H.J. Knee and Tesco for their continued sponsorship.

“I also want to thank our committee and all the volunteers who have helped along the way. Without their efforts the event may not have gone ahead and they really were brilliant throughout.”
