POLICE are appealing for information after a female bus driver was punched and robbed by a passenger in Melksham yesterday evening.

The X34 Fare Saver bus was travelling from Frome to Melksham when the driver stopped in Longford Road, Melksham at approximately 6.30pm.

The female driver believed all passengers had left the bus but was mistaken and was approached by a male who punched her in the face and grabbed a bag containing the takings.

The man ran off behind the bus and out of sight. It is believed that a Vauxhall Corsa had to stop as he ran in front of the vehicle.

He is described as white, aged in his late 20s, 5ft 9ins to 5ft 10ins tall and of slim build. He had mousy hair and a spotty complexion and was wearing a black hoody and grey jogging bottoms.

It is believed the suspect got on the bus at Wyke Road, Trowbridge. He may have taken another earlier Faresaver bus into Trowbridge as he travelled back on a return ticket.

Fortunately the 38-year-old local victim was not seriously hurt in the incident but was very shaken.

DS Nicola Caffrey said: "This was a frightening experience for the bus driver and I would like to appeal for the help of the public to identify the man responsible.

"I would like all the passengers who travelled on the bus between Trowbridge and Melksham yesterday evening between 6-6.30pm to contact me.

"I would also like to speak to the driver of the Corsa which we believe had to stop as the suspect ran in front of the car on Longford Road.

"All calls will be taken in confidence and I encourage anyone with information to come forward."

Anyone with information should contact DS Caffrey at Melksham CID on 101.
