Youths name new £90k centre

YOUNG people got involved in a major decision making process on Monday as they met to discuss designs for a £90,000 youth centre refurbishment in Warminster.

The meeting is the second of several gatherings arranged by Wiltshire County Council's Youth Development Service, to help determine what the young people want from the amenity, based in The Close.

Youngster from across the community, including pupils at Kingdown School, chose the name, menu and décor for the new café that will provide a key social meeting place for youths.

As well as the café, which is likely to have internet access, the centre will also include a photography, dance and music studio.

Youths chose to call the café Extons, after a Richard Exton, who had traded on the site in 1695.

It was agreed that the meeting place would have five café-style tables with chairs and up to four leather sofas with coffee tables.

A pool table was also discussed and although it was noted that it would take up a lot of room, the youths were keen to see one installed, believing it to be a useful asset.

Ethical fair trade products will be sold in the café and youngsters plan to install a traffic light system advising them on which healthier products to go for.

The next meeting will be held on May 14 to discuss charges, opening times and activities.
