SUPPORTERS travelling to Oxford for the derby cup clash tomorrow tonight are encouraged to behave themselves, with an increased police presence on the scene.

Approximately 1,400 will pack into Kassam Stadium for the 7.45pm kick-off, but trouble before and after the match is always a risk when just 30 miles separates the two clubs.

Wiltshire Police will not encroach on Thames Valley Police’s turf, but instead keep a watchful eye on Swindon railway station and the town’s pubs for any misbehaviour.

A specialist football spotting team will be sent from Wiltshire for liaison with the away supporters, but the operation will be led by Thames Valley.

“We are sending our football spotting team. Those will be the people who can liaise with and speak to Swindon Town supporters where needed,” said Supt Andrew Carr.

“We are not sending out much else over there, but there will be extra police in Swindon to keep things ticking over as and when people come back to make sure everything is okay at this end.

“While we obviously appreciate the rivalry and want supporters to have a good time, we encourage everybody to enjoy the match and the spectacle responsibly.

“It’s nice to have local derbies and rivalries, it just needs to be kept at a sensible level.”
