CHIPPENHAM MP Michelle Donelan officially opened St Laurence School’s new sixth form centre today, (October 9) and was full of praise for the school and its pupils.

Although the two-storey high centre, equipped with classrooms, a computer room and a common room, has been open to pupils since the start of the school term, the Conservative MP was there for the grand unveiling on Friday.

St Laurence headteacher Fergus Stewart paid tribute to the new centre, and also said he supported pupils staying in full-time education until they were 18.

“This new centre is a brilliant addition to our campus,” said Mr Stewart.

“The accommodation that we had before wasn’t adequate for a modern sixth form and now we can provide a standard that the students deserve, so we are very pleased.

“I think it is right for education to go up to 18. We are in a very competitive economy and people need those two extra years of education.

“That doesn’t mean however that they have to stay at school - that is a common misconception. They can go to college or do an apprenticeship too.”

Ms Donelan was full of praise for the new building and the school and its pupils as a whole.

“It is a fantastic centre and school and one that is held in high esteem by the people of Bradford on Avon. It’s got a strong track record,” she said.

“I visited here during the election where I liaised with students, which was wonderful. They were all very engaged and on the ball.”
