GARDENING tools and equipment used by members of Salisbury Allotments Association should be more secure now thanks to a joint venture between members and the police.

Police officers visited association allotments in London Road, Cow Lane and Fisherton Farm last weekend to security code tools and equipment.

Over the next few weekends, police will also visit allotments at Warres Acre, Wiltshire Road and Coldharbour Lane (May 12), and Butts Farm and Stratford Road on May 13.

Allotment security is seen as a priority by the association, which has already set up the first Allotment Watch Scheme in Wiltshire with guidance from Crime Prevention officer, Claire Rooney Wiltshire Allotment Watch produced signs for all the city's allotment sites, which was funded by Salisbury District Council.

It is hoped to extend the scheme across the county. The security coding of gardening tools and equipment is supported by the Salisbury Community Beat Team, the Community Safety Officer and police community support officers.

The cost of the security marking is being borne by the police.
