THE final phases of the Bruce Street Bridges resurfacing works will get underway on Monday, Swindon Borough Council has announced, revealing they should be complete in a fortnight.

But work to resurface Kemble Drive has been postponed until the end of January to ease congestion around the Designer Outlet Village during the Christmas and New Year period.

Contractors are scheduled to surface the final section of the Bruce Street Bridges junction next week as the complex highways scheme edges closer to completion.

The surfacing is due to start on Monday and is expected to last for two weeks, subject to weather conditions.

As part of the initial phase of the surfacing, Rodbourne Road will be closed for two days from Monday between Romsey Street and Bruce Street Bridges.

In order to minimise disruption for drivers, the work will be carried out off peak between 11am and 3pm. Traffic will be diverted via Kemble Drive in both directions with Rodbourne Road being reopened to rush-hour traffic.

The surfacing works will also result in the closure of Bruce Street. Great Western Way on both approaches to Bruce Street Bridges will remain open to traffic throughout although there will be lane closures throughout the two-week period.

The carriageway will, however, be open to two lanes at peak times where possible.

The Great Western Trade Park access road will also form part of the surfacing work.

Advance signs have been placed warning motorists of increased congestion in the area, while residents and businesses have been informed.

Cllr Dale Heenan, Swindon Borough Council’s cabinet member for sustainability and transport, said: “The final phase of the Bruce Street Bridges work is due to start shortly and will transform the new junction so that it looks almost complete for those using it.

“Like many, I am counting down the days to when this project is finished but this work is happening now to ensure our roads and junctions can cope with traffic, before the 25,000 plus new houses are built around Swindon over the next 20 years.

“The contractors will be resurfacing the roundabout, and they must complete the Rodbourne Road work during off peak hours to avoid as much disruption as possible to commuters, the businesses and local residents.”
