THREE months after a holiday accident that paralysed her eight-year-old daughter, a Trowbridge mum is battling to find a new home after her landlord told her she has to move out.

Tasha Wright, of Ramsbury Walk, and her daughter Nakita were on holiday in Portugal in October when the accident happened.

“We went down to the beach to do some surfing and she was trying to get up on the board on the sand, practising what to do in the water and she fell awkwardly,” the 37-year-old said.

“She immediately started crying and checking her feet and she struggled to walk.

“Nakita has always been active and to fall over, we thought it was a twisted ankle or something small and we never thought it would result in this.”

After spending a month in hospital in Faro, Nakita was transferred to Bristol Children’s Hospital and found to have Surfers' myelopath – a rare spinal cord injury caused by hyperextension of the back.

Miss Wright, who works at Rainbows Early Years, said doctors initially thought Nakita had an infection in her spinal cord. She has since spent every day at her daughter’s bedside.

“It is such a rare condition that she’s one of 64 people in the world to have it,” she added.

“There is no research being done into it to find a cure or treatment.

“There is a main artery that runs next to the spine and the way they described it to me is that it is like a hosepipe that when it is moved in so many ways, it can bend and once that kink gets in it’s hard to get out.

“If I didn’t have insurance, I don’t know what I would have done.”

The condition has paralysed Nakita, a Holbrook Primary pupil, from the waist down and the lack of research means it is unknown whether there is a treatment or cure.

Now the family have been told they need to vacate their house and find somewhere else to live that is suitable for home adaptations to accommodate for Nakita, who has been transferred to Stoke Mandeville hospital.

“We have been issued with an NHS wheelchair but she’s eight years old and all she wants is a pink or purple one," said Miss Wright.

“We’ve also recently been told we have to move out of this house where we’ve been for eight years so we are on the council housing list but the properties that are coming up don’t have a staircase isn’t wide enough for a lift.”

Miss Wright’s colleagues at TLC Hair Salon, where she also works, are also to help fundraise to cover some of the costs which are believed to be in the thousands.

“These things do happen and you don’t think it is going to happen to you and it has been life changing in just one second,” she added.

“My family and friends have been brilliant and everyone has been so supportive and positive with it all that it gets you through the day.”
