THERE were smiles all round on Roves Farm this morning after one of the ewes unexpectedly gave birth to five lambs.

It was known she was pregnant with three youngsters but there was surprise and delight when a further two popped out.

Despite the odds of quintuplets being around a million to one, this is the second year running it has occurred at the Sevenhampton farm.

Pippa Burr, sheep farmer who is in charge of the lambing at Roves Farm, said: “It’s special when any lamb is born but to have five in one go is wonderful and completely unexpected.

“This has put a smile on everyone’s face and all our visitors today have been eager to see the new arrivals.”

The sheep were born very quickly. The ewe went into labour at shortly after 8am and was finished by 8.30am.

“It’s difficult to tell if there are more than three lambs due,” said Pippa.

“But once the third was out she quickly tended to her new born before laying down so we knew another was coming and then it just came out followed quickly by a fifth.

“The odds this happening are so small for this to happen once but to happen twice is fantastic.”
