SCHOOLBOY Nedd Callis is proving to be a chip off the old block as he prepares to have his flowing hair cut in front of a crowd of thousands at this year’s Concert At The Kings in All Cannings, near Devizes.

Nedd, 11, the son of one of the concert’s founders, John ‘Grubby’ Callis, has decided to do his bit to raise money for cancer charities by taking part in the very public head shave on May 21.

He said: “My dad started the concert with two friends who all had cancer and they wanted to give something back. For two years I have been selling glow sticks and I have raised £136.

“This year to celebrate the festival’s fifth year I want to raise a lot more.

"I have been growing my hair for a few years so it is now long. I am going to have it all shaved off on the stage on the day.”

Nedd, who is a pupil at Pewsey Vale School, hopes to raise at least £3,000. His dad, who has just returned from working with Paul McCartney in America, said he was proud of his son.

He said: “It was all his own idea. Hopefully by seeing him have his head shaved on stage a lot of people will want to donate and then he can go around with a bucket.”

Mr Callis, who is one of McCartney’s sound engineers, is also backed by his wife Cheryl and daughters Bertie, 13, and Milla, 16. Bertie will be singing on the introduction stage while Milla will be helping in the dressing rooms.

“Everything is going great for this year. Tickets are selling very well.”

Last year he had to spend the days leading up to the concert– which takes place in a field at the back of the Kings Arms – away on tour. This time he has been allowed time off from the Argentinian leg of McCartney’s tour.

He said: “I was very grateful. It makes it much easier and then I can join back up for the European part of the tour.”

American rocker Suzi Quatro is headlining this year’s concert with support from Marmalade, Big Country and the SAS band.

For those who can not wait to get in the mood a special behind-the-scenes tour of the venue is to be staged on Friday from 6pm to 9pm.

Tickets for the tour and a chat with organisers, to include Mr Callis plus Kings Arms pub landlord Richard Baulu and Andy Scott from The Sweet, cost £10, which includes a buffet.
