IT was anything but quiet at Bradford on Avon's Library from July 15-16 as more than 700 bookworms were treated to their mini book festival.

For two days, the town's library once again became a buzzing hub for writing, reading, drawing, workshops, dressing up and much more.

Some of the star attractions included Martin Brown, illustrator of the Horrible History Books, John McLay, who wrote Dragon’s Dentist, and Catherine Bruton, author of We Can Be Heroes, among others.

Children's author Maudie Smith, said: "We had a brilliant time at the mini book festival. It is BOAMBF for short which rhymes with oomph and we reckon there was plenty of that.

"It was fabulous to see our local library buzzing with creativity and imaginative book-based activities. Everywhere you looked there were stories being told, stories being invented and stories being brought to life.

"Perhaps best of all, 120 children signed up for the Summer Reading Challenge so we know BOAMBF has done its bit to get children excited about books and reading and writing.

"We had lots of great feedback from adults and children alike. One enthusiastic mum commented that it was, "entertaining and fun, and inspiring for all ages."

This was the second edition of the event which looks to encourage children how they could become a writer in the future, develop their writing skills, as well as taking part in a vast array of activities.

Fellow author Fleur Hitchcock added: "It was quite a day. While the children were here, how it buzzed and hummed. We had been to lots of schools beforehand so the kids knew more than their parents but I think we managed to deliver more than they expected.

"There was turnip cakes, coloured tights, crazy characters, and gym and stories and all that making. We built Charles chocolate factory in the foyer and loads of children and their parents joined in. If we had more time and more space it could have run on and on as the kids seemed utterly absorbed."

The summer reading challenge encourages children to read six books during the summer holidays in return for prizes, a certificate and a medal.
