DEVIZES firefighter Mike Cleaver is once again getting on his bike to raise money for a charity that has supported his young daughter Poppy who suffers from epilepsy.

Mr Cleaver will be joined by crew manager Richard Lake and firefighter Archie Webster, also from Devizes fire station, and station manager Tom Brolan, district commander for Pewsey along with Mr Cleaver's brother-in-law Dan Scott for the Prudential Ride London 100 on July 31.

The ride will cover 100 miles in London and Surrey using the road race route used during the last Olympics.

The team is raising money for the Epilepsy Society, which has given Mr Cleaver and his family a lot of support since Poppy, eight, was diagnosed with the condition.

He said: “Dan, Archie and I were part of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ who completed the 24 hour cycle challenge around Wiltshire’s fire stations last year, and both Tom and Rich are also keen cyclists, so we thought this would be a fun way to raise some money for a charity that’s very close to my heart.”

His whole family took part in a cake and coffee morning at Devizes fire station earlier this year to raise money for the epilepsy charity and was delighted with the way the town supported the cause.

As if the one bike challege wasn’t enough, Mr Cleaver and Mr Scott will also be tackling the Ride24 Newcastle to London event on August 20 and 21 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

This is a 310 mile route that is completed in 24 hours, and is personal to Dan from Melksham, as his brother has the disease.

Mr Cleaver said: “As well as Dan’s brother being in a rapid decline from motor neurone, a friend of mine lost his dad to the disease last year. We’re both cyclists who like to tackle longer rides, so this seemed a great challenge and a great cause.”
