Appearing in a music video for indie rock band The Wombats is a strange stepping stone to performing on a floating theatre, but for Matt Jopling it is a summer to treasure.

The musician/actor has jumped aboard the Tyseley, a vintage narrow boat that traverses the inland waterways of the UK bringing theatre anywhere for everyone and he was looking forward to every minute.

The Tyseley is celebrating her 80th birthday and the touring theatre company Mikron have notched up 41 years of steering her to various venues including a boatyard, allotment site and once even a tunnel.

Marianne NcNamara, Artistic Director, said: "I take the legacy of Mikron very seriously. For 45 years Mikron has toured to places that other companies don't, and that means we are often deep in heart of the countryside, with no venue nearby, or finding ourselves performing in the most unlikely of places. We love how informal our performances are, and make shows that we can all relate to, whether that's our shared history, or our shared love of chocolate!"

It is chocolate's intriguing history and the sweet smell of success of the confectionery that forms the base of Mikron's latest production. They are bringing Pure to Cricklade on Friday, August 12.

The drama flits back and forth through the years and is written by Richard Vergette, who has produced work for Hull Truck Theatre, Ensemble 52, Battersea Arts Centre and The Arts Theatre in London's West End.

Richard said: Researching this play has been fascinating. Discovering that child and slave labour are still features of chocolate production made me realise that whilst I wanted the play to celebrate chocolate, I couldn't ignore the darker elements either."

Joining Matt in the cast are Claire Burns, Stephanie Hackett and James Mclean. James is a veteran of Mikon and has appeared in Channel 4's TV series Shameless, Emmerdale, Appropriate Adult and Secrets and Words.

Pure will be staged at Cricklade Bloomers, High Street in Cricklade from 7.30pm. Tickets are £10 from 01793 751394 or visit www.crickladeinbloom.co.uk - Flicky Harrison
