TRIBUTES continue to pour in across Wiltshire in memory of Melksham Oak Community School teaching assistant Keiren Edney, who died of suspected meningitis earlier this month.

The 21-year-old, known as Ned, was rushed to Bath’s Royal United Hospital but died in the ambulance, less than a day after complaining about a sore throat.

Since his death, the Edney family have been inundated with messages of love and support. Following the funeral last week, football clubs and the school are putting together testimonials and tributes to toast his memory.

Last Saturday, a minute’s silence was held by his former club, Calne Eagles, in their match against Hilperton, with another silent tribute being paid before Melksham Town’s game.

Ned coached the under-16 side and taught at the Charlie Austin Football School.

The club and the football school are now busy planning an event titled In Memory of Keiren “Ned” Edney on October 9, when from 10am-12.30pm, there will be children’s activities, crossbar challenges and penalty shootouts.

At 12.30pm Melksham U16’s will play the Charlie Austin Football School and at 2pm the Melksham XI will play the Calne Eagles.

“We want to do our bit to recognise what a great role model he was for the youngsters and how much of a gentleman he was,” said the team’s manager Darren Perrin.

“He did not have a nasty bone in his body. He would have done anything for anyone, especially his family but also the kids that he coached.

“A few of our lads will take part and pay tribute to Keiren, who was a wonderful addition to the club as a coach and a person.

“I hope that it will be as successful as it possibly can be for his family and friends and for those who looked up to him.

“We are delighted to help out and be part of this.”

Dave Wiltshire, chairman of Melksham Town FC, added: “Everyone said he was a really smashing lad and he did wonders for the U16 side.”

An inquest into his death was opened and adjourned on Wednesday at Avon Coroner’s Court.
