A stretch of the A3102 near Bromham which passes through Calne has been closed due to a gas leak.

Engineers are currently working onsite to repair the pipes between Calne and Melksham and drivers are asked to follow the diversion route in place as the whole A3102 has been closed.

Residents reported a strong smell of gas this morning but many business owners did not know the road had been closed or that there was a gas leak.

Louise Fraser of the Westbrook Inn in Bromham said: "This morning funnily enough I could smell gas and we have had the gas people out to check our gas tanks but it was fine. The smell must have been from the leak down the road.

"Normally on a Monday lunchtime we are full but there are only a few customers here today - about two tables - but that is probably why."

Not all businesses on the main road have been affected though and it is business as usual for V & P Collins Farm Shop.

Manager Caroline Jones said: "We knew the road was closed but we did not know why and it was only when the bread delivery man told us we knew there was a gas leak.

"When I came out my house this morning in Bromham I smelt gas and when I went to hang my clothes out to dry I could still smell it.

"It has been a normal Monday morning for us and I don't think it is affecting us - we had a couple come up from Calne and they came through Derry Hill."

Bill Frost, Wales & West Utilities Senior Operational Manager for Wiltshire, said: “We are working to repair a leaking gas pipe on the A3102 road between Calne and Melksham.

“So we can do this work safely, the A3102 has been temporarily closed. A diversion route is clearly signposted.

“This repair is a complex job and we do not yet know how long it will take. Our engineers are working as safely and as quickly as they can and we will keep the local community and commuters updated.

“If anyone smells gas, thinks they have a gas leak, or suspects carbon monoxide poisoning, they should call us on 0800 111 999 and our engineers will be there to help, day or night."
