BUILDING work on Bowood Estate's new hotel and health club is due to start in October.

The contract to build the four-star hotel development will go out to tender with a shortlist drawn up by the end of June.

The hotel in the grounds of Bowood House and Gardens between Chippenham and Calne, will open in early 2009.

With 43 en-suite bedrooms, including six suites, the hotel will adjoin the existing Bowood Golf & Country Club.

There will be an 80-seat restaurant, bar and two lounges with open wood burning fires.

A key element of the development will be its use of a Biomass system to provide hot water and heating.

Wood from the estate will be used in the environmentally friendly wood fuel heating system, which converts energy from wood into heat for water and rooms.

The health club will offer an 18 metre by six-metre swimming pool, gym, rock saunas with cold drench showers and aromatherapy showers.

Membership of the club will be available and hotel guests will also be able to benefit from a range of beauty and health treatments in their rooms.

All rooms will have plasma screen televisions and Internet access.

Lord Lansdowne, owner of the Bowood Estate, said: "The construction of the hotel and health club will add enormously to the range of facilities we are able to offer at Bowood.

"The hotel and health club is the missing piece of our jigsaw and will enable us to offer guests the opportunity to stay in quality accommodation in beautiful surroundings."
