FOLLOWING the announcement by Swindon Borough Council of the results of the recent libraries consultation, and in advance of the decision on the future of the Swindon Library Service by the Borough Council's Cabinet next Wednesday, Save Swindon's Libraries campaign group will be holding a Day of Action on Saturday.

There will be two events to highlight library users' key concerns over the new plan and in solidarity with the staff who face reapplying for a dramatically reduced number of jobs this Christmas.

At Old Town Library there will be a read-in at 11am to demonstrate the importance and value of smaller branch libraries to their communities.

A similar event will be held in Highworth Market Square at 10am, moving to the library at 11am to underline that 15 hours of staffing per week is not enough.

Between 10-10.30am in Highworth Market Square, then 11.30am in the library there will be a demonstration and read-in to underline that only 15 hours of staffing per week is not enough

The CEO of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, Nick Poole has criticised the budget of £1.1m for the town's libraries as a 'political decision' which is not enough to run a library service compliant with the 1964 Act ('Comprehensive and Efficient').
