TEACHERS including headmaster Phil Bevan braved a soaking when they gave pupils at Devizes School the unusual opportunity to throw wet sponges at them.

The dunking on Friday was all in a good cause as it was to raise money for the charity Get Kids Going!

PE teacher Heather Lane is in training for next year's London Marathon and hopes to raise £3,000 for the charity which gives disabled young people the chance to take part in sport by providing them with specially adapted wheelchairs.

Mrs Lane hope her efforts will pay for at least one chair that could be used for anything from athletics to powerlifting.

On Friday year 7 pupils and school staff did their bit to launch Mrs Lane's target by holding a Sponge The Teacher event at lunchtime. Get Kids Going! is the year group's chosen charity for 2016/17.

Mrs Lane said: "Students were able to pay to throw sponges and even buckets full of water over their favourite teachers who had volunteered to give up their lunchtime, and get soaked in aid of this charity.

" We managed to raise over £200 which was an excellent start to our target. Get Kids Going is a fantastic charity that will give disabled children an opportunity to fully participate in sport at home and in school. We have lots more events coming up in school to help reach £3,000."

A spokesman for the charity said "Get Kids Going! inspires British disabled youngsters to compete in sporting events, from start to paralympic level, by also giving them sports grants to help with their; training, physiotherapy, travel, competition fees, design and development of sports' equipment."
