WITH the roadworks at the Springfield and Holt Road Junction still ongoing three months after the original finish date, residents of Bradford on Avon have had enough of the chaos it is causing to the traffic.

Richard Smith, 65, of Springfield, penned a letter to Wiltshire Council, stressing the effect the new roundabout and traffic lights at the Holt Road/Springfield junction is having on the area, including another letter he sent three years ago when the Kingston Mill development was given the green light. With warnings put up in the road on May 3 informing people it would be closed for 20 weeks, the road is still being worked on three months after the scheduled reopening.

Mr Smith said: “I knew this was going to happen when it was announced that 140 homes were going to be built, the road just cannot take it. There have been times when I want to drive down into town and there are cars blocking my way out of our road.

“When there was a consultation we did attend the meetings and filled out questionnaires but it just feels like no one listened and that the money was what was coming first.”

Wiltshire Council has since acknowledged that the works have taken more time than originally intended and has said that it is doing as much as possible to ensure the works are completed soon.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Council said: "We would like to thank the local businesses and residents for their support during this time, and assure them we always do everything we can to reduce the impact of the roadworks throughout Wiltshire.

“Unfortunately the development work on Holt Road has taken longer than expected, mainly due to the large voids discovered underneath the road which required extensive work. The work was also impacted by the urgent closure of Market Street and the damage to the town bridge.

“We have been working closely with the developer and the variety of local stakeholders to ensure the work is completed as soon as possible.”

Councillor Gwen Allison, deputy mayor for Bradford on Avon, said: "We appreciate it is inconvenient for the residents of the town with all of this upheaval. We will keep an eye on the works and hopefully they will be done soon. There was hope they would be done before Christmas but it will be in the new year. Unfortunately with developments like this it happens."
